Parallax Tide — Part 4 — Night to Day

“It was a drugstore robbery gone wrong.”

Kylie Wade and Ashley Dharen sat together on the bridge, the briny night wind and the gentle swaying of the waves her sole companions, looking equally somber.

“Dad was on his way home from Huntington,” The hospital Irvine Wade works/worked, I should clarify, “when some crackhead decided to rob, at gunpoint, the drugstore he was walking past. Of course, he couldn’t just run away. He walked in, tried to de-escalate things, and...completely out of his mind, the man emptied his entire magazine on him.”

“Fucking hell...I’m...”

“It made the news. Esteemed cardiac surgeon killed by drug addict. The killer, out of ammo and brain cells, was caught pretty much immediately. Life sentence without parole. But most importantly...It completely broke Mom.”

“I imagine...They were so happy together. So...what did Mom do ?”

“She wanted to forget the pain. Start a new life, away from the shithole that is LA. So...She sold everything but her picture albums of Dad, and settled in Hawaii. Where I and Eva were born.”

The vampire wanted to speak. Say something...but all she could utter were mere projects of words. Her father, mowed down so sensessly, her mother, ruined by grief...Even if it didn’t happen to her, she could still feel the pain.

“So, yeah, I’m from Kailua, O’ahu.”

“...Explains the tan. And the marine biology career. How easy is it for the same person to become different people, huh ? LA may be a coastal town, but Pasadena is double-digits miles away from the sea. So my interests were more about concrete than nature.”

“Yeah...I mean, For me, growing up...the beach was literally across the street.”

“Must have been sweet.” Wade giggled, glad to have successfully derailed the conversation. “For a moment I thought you chose that career because you were a Jotaro groupie.”

A blush came to decorate the scientist’s cheeks.

“As if I’d be down with worst JoJo ! He doesn’t even actually give a shit about sea life, it was just a personality trait stapled on a cardboard cutout of a giant T-bone ! And before you ask, no, I don’t have a Stand, and if even if I did it wouldn’t be StarPlat !”

“Preaching to the choir here, Ashley. But since we’re talking Stands...If anyone here secretely has Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, it would begin to explain a lot.”

An awkward silence falls as she seems puzzled. I bet she, like a pleb, didn’t read past part 3 and thus had no idea what a song by AC/DC had anything to do with the custard. Let’s not dwell, as Ashley did not.

“So anyway, about this vampire thing...It wouldn’t happen to be some sort of figure of speech, would it ?”

“Ha ha...I wish. But no, I’m the whole shebang. Need for blood, burn in the sun, supernatural powers...I get that must be hard to accept for a scientist, but them’s the breaks.”

“Splendid. Were you born like this or...”

“Embraced at 18. Nobody’s born a Cainite.”

“So that makes you how many years old total ?”

“Oh, just about 51. I’m not exactly a newborn nobody these nights, I’m even infamous in certain circles, but I’m faaar from being a big deal Ancient. Those guys have played the game for a good century and a half at the very least.”

“You don’t say...” Sighed the jellyfish enthusiast. “Supernatural happenings evidently abound, I can’t wake up, so it would seem I’m forced to accept whatever bullshit I’m presented with.”

“Hey, for what it’s worth, even I think this sitch is goddamn whack. And I’ve seen worse, believe you me ! Oh ! Which brings to mind. We left one fish alive in our catch earlier. It’s in the bucket over there, maybe you can identify it ?”

“Sure, why not ?” Sighed Ashley, glad to be in some measure of familiar territory.

* * *

“Oh yeah, that’s a rastrelliger kanagurta, no mistake.”

“A what ? Isn’t it just a mackerel ?”

“An indian mackerel.” Smiled the biologist. “Notice how broad it is, dorsal to pelvic fin. Atlantic mackerel species are much thinner.”

“Okay, so...that means it just got likelier we’re indeed in Indonesian waters ?”

“Yes. Most likely in the Banda sea.”

“Aight, glad to know where we are at least. Oh, and if you want the fish, go ahead. Otherwise it’s hardtacks and cured meats for ya.”

“Heh, it’s a living. I imagine it’s way worse for you.”

“Yeh. It is. Can’t even feed of a human if he hasn’t agreed to it. Cainite curse.”

“Hold on. Didn’t the hot one say you were a mercenary ? I can’t imagine that working with such a, airquotes, curse.”

“Right thinkin’, but...Attacking with intent to kill counts as agreement. Live by the sword, die by the sword sort of thing.”

That made a strange kind of sense to Ashley. And Kylie seemed to take in stride as well, as she left out a giggle and a smile.

“I’ll be honest...” Conceded Ashley. “Even if we in Hawaii are pretty damn spiritually connected, I would never have imagined to meet a real-ass supernatural creature. Not to mention a strangely chill vampire.”

“Oh, don’t get me wrong, sister from a former father. I was insufferable as a newborn.”

“Ha ha ha ha ! Yeah, all teenagers are cunts, but I was grand commander cunt too.” The marine biologist almost sunk into her memories when it hit her that Kylie Wade wasn’t talking HUMAN teenager. But the pale one just gave a nod, and continued.

“The only two things that kept all other Cainites from throwing me into the sun were my fighting skills and my utter commitment to never involve mortals who weren’t in a gang. See, every story you’ve read or seen involving vampires wanting to conquer humanity is utter bullcrap. We are in the shadows, and we damn well like it that way. Of all the sins a newborn Cainite can do, revealing we’re real is by far the worst. So a problem child who’s ready and willing to do the Ancients’ dirty work while wholly dedicated to steer clear from peaceful mortals ? Yeah, I was useful. They never really knew why my obviously psychopathic ass only attacked gang , because they didn’t know my curse and what it entailed yet. To be honest, neither did I. I was just happy breaking femurs, humeri and taking a quick sippy left and right to bother the more socially apt vamps. The Prince -LA’s ruling Cainite- had a saying : Each minor problem like a grain of sand ; each night I inherit a desert.”

“Nice quote, I’ll have to steal it.”

“Many have, bet your sweet ass on that. But with that kind of perspective, the grain of sand red hot and agitated enough to clear a beach on the regular swiftly becomes an asset.”

“So a let’em devour each other sort of situation ?”

“Well, basically I was his bloodhound, he called me when low level trouble was chafing his armani-suited balls and sicced me at them, but it was in my wheelhouse anyway so I accepted the bones he threw. It was a system, and it worked. Seeds of rebellion against the Prince were weeded out, the vampiric status quo remained...Hell, even the notoriously vicious LA gangs lied relatively low, and there was sort of a running joke among them, about Batman being real, just on the wrong coast. Nah, unlife was cool then. Problems really arose for me when two things happened. LA changed management, and I discovered what my real clan was. I’d explain, but...Basically, it’s not even midnight and I’d be dust before being done with the preamble of what the fuck happened and why.”

Ashley looked at the galleon’s masts, their sails still rolled at the top.

“I expect we’ll still have many nights to go over that anyway.”

“Yyep. So...how about you ?” Longshanks turned to the biologist. “Never been to Hawaii, how is it really ?”

“Well, it’s pretty much either the bustle of the touristy spots y’all on the mainland know about, or the wilderness, and I chose to be about the latter. Not like I was the only one...Hawaii has the best marine biology labs in the world for a reason. Like I said, the beach was literally across the street. You’d have to make it a conscious effort beginning from the womb to not love the evserloving hell out of the sea in my neighborhood. So...”

“Did mom remarry ?”

“Hm ? Ah, no, she just straight refused to even consider the prospect. She did a bang-up job as a single mom though.”

“Awesome. I do wish her all the best, and not as a throwaway get well soon card sorta thing.”

“You do seem to me...Trying to look chill but letting slip you’re really hella not ?”

The vampire opened her third eye. It was not only glowing, but weeping blood. Her young face contorted into a rictus of unadulterated violence worth an army conditioned to be devoid of empathy contained into a single girl.

“I dont think you properly understand how angry I am.” I am filled with revenge. It fucking consumes me. It’s basically an addiction.”

So the scientist chose to...deflect and let that go to the worry pile for later.

“It’s fine. Aloha ! So, yeah...There wasn’t a day when I didn’t go out swimming. I was pretty good at school, but the teachers were basically laughing it up on show-and-tell day because that’d be the day Ashley Dharen brought an urchin, hands bleeding, and gushing how great it was.”

“And why shouldn’t you ?” Smiled the Pretty. “Urchins are awesome !”

“Yes, fascinating creatures, and you won’t believe how varied their species get ! Black-long spines, slate pencils...I dived a lot, but I always give a little attention to the protective mollusks !”

“Hmm...Maybe I should give a chance to dive. I mean, being dead, I don’t even need to breathe, that’s a huge hurdle cleared, right ?”

“A...Disturbing thought but, yes. That would be huge. There are many other factors to consider though. How do vampires react to pressure, for instance ?”

“Ha ! Well, I have no idea really, but...Since we’re here, why not test it ? There have been rumors of entire civilisations of caïnites having formed societies so deep the hated Sun never reaches.”

“That would make a disturbing amount of sense. Not to mention sensational camera work in the fauna down there...” Observed Ashley, looking a bit sweaty.

“Yeah, but no breathing or not, going straight to the ocean floor can’t be executed all willy-nilly, even I know that much. And do keep in mind the abyssal vampires thing is roughly on par with the Loch Ness monster, or even less because we don’t even have a picture.”

“So, real theoretical shit going on, huh ?” The Pretty observed. “A shot in the dark...Ooh, sort of sexy.”

“Pretty much. Anyway, sun’s rising. Bye.”

And so, Wade sunk into the galleon’s bilge. It was a comfort to her...Though she didn’t expect any pleasant dreams to come. Especially since there was something tugging at her mind. What exactly it was...Even her Auspex couldn’t tell. But there was something. Something, or someone, she couldn’t forgive herself to forget. What was she to do about it, though ? Her quirk could leave her awake through daytime, but maybe vampiric sleep was just the kind of rest she needed.

Ultimately...She made her choice. Torpor it was.

And...completely out of nowhere, she did dream.

There was...a little girl at her feet, playing with an owl. Auspex did work somehow in the dream...The owl was a changeling. A Fae child. And she formed a bond with...The other girl...

“Heh, what the fuck are you talking about ? Jesus, you really are a light sleeper.” Complained Heisenberg, standing over her like she owned every molecule in Wade’s body. “You played with a little girl or two, so what ?”

“Isa.”

“What ?” I

“My rape...My moonlight...My daughter...”

“Wow, wow, rape ? You disappoint me, longshanks.”

“Fifty...Men...I’m tough...I’m tough ! But...Too much...Too much. Rape. I was raped...Yes, I was...defeated, and with a child cooking in.”

“The fuck are you even talking about ? You’re dead ! You quite literally couldn’t bring a child into this world !”

“I wasn’t embraced yet...Isa...My little girl...Was born, right before I died.”
