Casey sat at the worn wooden table in their shared apartment, the dim glow of the desk lamp casting long shadows across the cluttered and messy room. The air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and old books, a testament to the late nights he’d spent hunched over his laptop. Jordan lounged on the sagging couch nearby, her muscular legs draped over the armrest, clad in baggy cargo shorts that barely concealed the alluring swell of her firm, rounded hips and the pronounced, tantalizing curves of her full breasts straining against the thin fabric of her faded band tee, her dark hair tied back in a messy ponytail; she flipped through a magazine absentmindedly, but her eyes kept darting to Casey, drawn by that indefinable pull he had—the one that made people lean in when he spoke. She couldn’t understand it. Casey was just about the most average guy she could imagine. There was literally nothing remarkable about him. Until, that is, he focused on you and he spoke. His gaze and his voice had some kind of power over most people. Not a lot. But when he spoke, people listened. It is why Jordan fell for him. She had always thought she was lesbian until she met Casey, now she knew she leaned just a LITTLE bit bi. So, she did the “best friend” thing with Casey. They’d go out to the bars and clubs, and she would be his wingman, he would be hers. They both had similar tastes in women, excepting that Casey preferred his to be bi or straight, whereas Jordan was always on the prowl for lesbians. Which worked out for the both of them, because they were never competing for women.

“Hey, Jordan,” Casey said, his voice with that ever-present confidence, cutting through the quiet like a warm blade. “I’ve been working on this research paper for my psych class. I think I have broken new ground on how self-help can be actualized.”

“Self-help?” Jordan questioned. “I thought you were focusing on subliminal messaging and neural programming?”

Casey replied back, “Keep up, Jordan! That is so LAST year. It was fine for my undergraduate work, but that is so played out. Now that I am working on my Master’s I am expected to do ACTUAL research and contribute to the field in at least a mild way. That subliminal stuff has been researched and tested and poked and prodded so many times—mostly by horny old goats who just want to have an excuse to control young coeds—that there is no new ground to break.”

Jordan guffawed. “And you think there is something new to be said about self-help? I won’t disagree about your take on subliminals. I always thought they were a bit creepy, and I was a little bit weirded out with you studying them. But, c’mon” she flapped her arms in exasperation, “Self-help? That has got to be the only area of psychology that is more played out than subliminal programming.”

Casey smiled. “I would have thought so, too. But Dr. St. Germaine, my advisor, suggested a couple avenues for me to look into, and I gotta say, I think I might be on to something. If it doesn’t work, I can always go back to the drawing board. It is only the first semester of my Master’s anyway. I still have time to pivot. Anyway, mind proofreading it for me when I’m done? You always catch the stuff I miss.” He leaned back in his chair, his eyes locking onto hers with a quiet intensity that made her stomach flutter.

Jordan nodded eagerly, her cheeks flushing slightly as she imagined spending more time with him, maybe even alone in his room. “Sure, Casey, I’d love to help,” she replied, “anything for you.”

As Jordan returned to her magazine, Casey turned back to his screen, his fingers hovering over the keys. He knew he had to protect himself first; after all, the concepts he was toying with—subliminal mantras and neural programming—could backfire if he wasn’t careful. Pulling up a private document, he typed out his own set of affirmations, phrases like “I remain in control, my will unyielding” repeated in bold, looping script, designed to inoculate his mind against the very tools he was creating. Satisfied, he began crafting the thesis description with layers of innocuous self-help elements about personal growth, subtly infusing various power dynamics that interwove subliminally throughout. He fed the segments into an AI program, watching as it stitched them together into a seamless whole, the words pulsing on the screen like a heartbeat. The final document emerged, its language seductive and layered, promising liberation through surrender, with key phrases like “open up to guidance” buried deep to entice the subconscious. Little did Jordan know, she’d be the first to read it, and Casey felt a thrill of anticipation building in his chest, his cock stirring slightly at the thought of the control it might grant him.
