Chapter 4 — The Shift
Greg sat in the office for a while after he wrote the words, his mind drifting. The pencil rested in his hand again, its warmth strangely comforting. His thoughts kept pulling him upstairs to Toni—the way she’d looked at him that morning, head tilted, noticing something she couldn’t quite name. He still wasn’t sure whether she was reacting to actual changes or if he was simply projecting.
He turned the pencil over in his fingers, then gripped it tightly, feeling its power. Finally, he slipped it back into the notebook and returned the book to the drawer. He stood up.
The house was dark. He moved through the living room by memory, past the couch where they so often sat together yet apart, past the kitchen where she’d stirred sauce with her back to him. The stairs creaked under his weight, the same third step from the bottom groaning as always, and he wondered about how many times he had climbed these stairs without really seeing her once he got to the top.
The bedroom door was cracked open. He pushed it gently. The hallway light spilled across the bed. Toni lay on her side facing away from him, one arm tucked under her pillow. The sheet had slipped to her waist. She was wearing one of his old gray t-shirts, soft from years of washing, the collar stretched wide enough to reveal the curve of her shoulder and the hollow of her collarbone.
He stopped in the doorway.
Something was different. He felt it in his chest before his mind caught up—a sharp, urgent shift in how his body responded to her. His pulse quickened. His skin grew warm. When his gaze traced the shape of her hip under the sheet and the way the fabric draped over the rise of her ass, the pull he felt was sharper than it had been in months.
He crossed the room and slid into bed beside her. The mattress dipped, and she made a small sound, half-asleep and shifted toward his warmth. He lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, but his hand moved on its own — across the mattress, across the distance he had kept between them for too long—until his fingers brushed her hip.
Her skin was warm and soft. He let his palm rest there, feeling the rise and fall of her breathing.
She didn’t pull away.
He woke on his own Sunday morning. Their weekend routine required no alarms.
The room was gray with early light. Toni was turned away from him, her hands under her pillow, her legs drawn up pushing her ass outward in a subtly inviting posture. Her breathing was slow and even — she was still sleeping. He had moved in behind her during the night, his face buried in her hair, his chest pressed warmly against her back, his left arm draped over her, his hand finding its way beneath her, cupping the soft swell of her breast in his palm.
He was hard. Had been for a while, the kind of erection that pulsed with his heartbeat. She was pressed against him, pushing him into the crease between her panty-covered cheeks. He didn’t move, not wanting to break whatever spell had brought them together in the dark.
Then, a subtle shift. Her fingers, seeking his, found the back of his hand resting on her breast. They traced a slow, deliberate circle over his knuckles, a silent acknowledgment.
“Toni.” Her name came out rough, almost a question.
She pushed back with her butt again, a soft, deliberate wiggling, then another, more insistent push.
“Mmm,” she murmured, a husky sound he hadn’t heard in some time. “This is different.”
“Different good or different bad?” he asked with a bit of dread.
“This,” she repeated, pressing her ass back against the ridge of his cock, her fingers pressing a little harder against his hand. “It’s different good. You aren’t usually like this in the morning.”
He couldn’t form words, not yet. The words he’d written were now true. The physical changes had taken hold and were in turn indirectly causing other changes. They were now unfolding into a new reality.
His hand began to move on her breast, fingertips finding her nipple, rubbing with a firm, deliberate pressure that brought it to a hard peak. He pressed into her, slow and deliberate, the ridge of his cock catching against the seam of her panties, a bead of precum glistening at its tip. He drew back, the friction of cloth against cloth a teasing sensation as it disappeared into his shorts once more.
He nuzzled her neck, tasting the warm skin, and she opened to him, offering more of herself to his exploration. They ground against each other, a deeper, more insistent friction building. His hand left her breast and traced a slow path to the waistband of her panties. He ran his fingers down over the soft fabric, felt a faint dampness beneath. He pressed the fabric against her as he moved. She shifted her legs, offering him more access. He brought his hand back to the top of her panties, then down again, this time beneath the soft cotton barrier.
“Greg,” Her voice came soft, almost uncertain.
“Hmm?”
His hand moved with more purpose, skin on skin now, stroking her wet slit from top to bottom, spreading the slick warmth and awakening dormant nerve endings. Her hips moved toward his fingers.
“Get on your back,” he whispered, voice a low rasp, making room for her to turn.
Greg positioned himself at her side, bracing himself on his right elbow. With his left hand, he tugged her panties down her legs. She lifted her legs, and they came free in his grasp. He spun them — a flash of pale fabric against the dim light — and tossed them to the floor at the foot of the bed.
“We won’t be needing those,” he told her, his gaze holding hers. “Or this.” He added, pulling her shirt up and off her. He tossed it away to her panties.
She was bare now, exposed to him in the soft morning light, her body illuminated in a gentle glow. His mouth found hers in a deep, hungry kiss — nothing like the quick pecks they had traded in recent years. She responded with equal heat, fingers threading through his hair, her body pressing against his.
The kiss deepened, tongues tangling, exploring. When he finally pulled back, he looked at her — really looked — and felt that sharp pull again, stronger this time. Her breasts were full, soft, her nipples already hard from the cool air and the warmth of his hands. He wanted to put his mouth on her. He wanted to taste every inch of her skin.
He slid his hand down her stomach, over the soft curve of her belly, fingers brushing through the soft curls of her pubic hair, finding the warm folds beneath. She was so wet. Slick and warm, her thighs already parting for him. He slid his fingers through her, found her clit, and she gasped against his mouth.
“Greg... yes,” she moaned, her voice thick with need.
He circled her clit with his thumb. Her hips tilted into his hand, seeking more. She was wetter than he ed. Hotter. Her hand found his wrist, not to stop him, but to hold him there, to press him harder against her.
“I’m not done with you,” he said, his voice a low growl, and moved down her body. His mouth traced a line down her neck, across her chest, over the soft swell of her belly, finally stopping at her thighs. His breath was warm and gentle on her pussy, she knew what was coming.
She looked at him — eyes dark, cheeks flushed. “You sure?”
“I’ve been wanting to taste you for months. I just forgot how to ask.”
Her breath caught. Then she let her thighs fall open. “Then stop asking.”
He lowered his mouth to her. She was already soaked. He could smell her, taste her on his lips before he even truly made . He ran his tongue through her folds, from her entrance to her clit, and she moaned — a raw, broken sound, her hand fisting in the sheets.
“God, Greg,” she gasped.
He found a rhythm. A flat tongue, broad strokes that swept over her sensitive skin, then tighter, more focused, flicking her clit with precision while she squirmed above him. Her hips rocked against his mouth, her breath coming faster. Her thighs tensed. Her fingers tightened in his hair.
“I’m gonna — ahhhhh —”
He pressed his tongue flat against her clit and sucked, gentle but insistent. She cried out, muffling it against her own arm as she came. Her body arched off the bed, her thighs clamping around his head, and he felt her pulse against his tongue, hot and rhythmic.
He stayed there, cherishing the feeling, until she stopped shaking. Then he kissed the inside of her thigh and crawled back up her body.
She was breathing hard. Her hand found his face, and she pulled him into a kiss that tasted like herself. “That was — you never —”
“I wanted to taste you. All of you. I don’t know why I stopped doing that.”
Color touched her cheeks. She looked down, then back up at him — something flickering in her eyes she couldn’t quite name.
“Put it in me.” she said pleadingly.
He rose, shed his boxers, hurriedly tossing them aside, and positioned himself at her entrance, the head of his cock nearly at its intended target. He looked down at her. Their eyes locked. Her lips were parted in anticipation.
“You do it, guide me in.” he said.
She almost laughed. “Just do it, Greg.”
“Toni.” His voice dropped, not hard — patient. “For me.”
Hesitantly she reached between them and wrapped her hand around his cock and rubbed it against per folds getting him wet with her juices.
“Look how wet you are for me.”
She put the head against her entrance and he pushed into her.
“God, you feel like —” he couldn’t finish. He didn’t have words for it.
She was tight, hot and slick. He felt her stretch around him as he buried himself to the hilt. They both groaned, the sound mingling in the space between their mouths. He stayed there for a moment, letting her adjust, feeling her inner muscles clench around him.
“I’m good, Greg. Move,” she whispered, her voice tight with anticipation.
He pulled out slowly — a long, deliberate drag — then pushed back in hard, and she gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. He found a rhythm, deep and steady, and it felt different from before. A new strength moved through him. His hips moved without tiring, and with every thrust, she took him deeper.
“More,” she said, her voice hard.
His hips responded, finding a harder, faster tempo than he’d known in years. He drove into her, the bed creaking beneath them, her breasts bouncing with the force of his thrusts. Her hands caught her breasts — not to touch, just to hold them still — but her fingers grazed her nipples anyway, and she gasped at the . He watched her face, mesmerized — her mouth opening in a silent cry, her eyes rolling back, her entire body coming apart.
“Ahhh, I’m — Greg —”
“Go ahead, let it go,” he urged. “Show me. want to this. I want to you like this.”
Her body clenched around him, hot and pulsing, and the heat of her dragging him with her. He wanted to hold on, wanted to make it last, but she was so tight, so wet and responsive. Even with the words he’d written the night before — the changes they’d made — he couldn’t delay any longer. He came harder than he had in years, buried deep inside her, his entire body tensed as he emptied himself into her.
He collapsed beside her, breathing hard, his heart hammering against his ribs.
They lay there in the gray morning light, tangled in each other, slick with sweat and the evidence of their shared ion just enjoying the moment. Toni turned her head on the pillow, her eyes finding his.
“What a way to say good morning. What got into you?”
“I’ve wanted you like this every morning for years. I just — stopped believing I could have you.” he said.
She smiled, slow and satisfied. “Wake up like that more often.”
He pulled her closer, her back fitting perfectly against his chest, and pressed a kiss to her shoulder. He thought about the pencil in the drawer of his desk. Thought about the words he’d written. Thought about the dead plant that was now alive, the extra hundred dollars in his wallet, and the way his body felt now — lighter, stronger, more his own. She settled against him, her hand finding his where it rested on her stomach, and for a long moment, neither of them spoke.
Her breathing slowed. She drifted back toward sleep. His thoughts tumbled. The pencil had worked. It had changed him, altered the very way his body responded. And somehow, that had changed the way she responded to him. He’d barely begun to explore its potential.
He thought about Toni’s parents. About the stifling, narrow-minded attitudes she’d been raised with, the shame she carried like a second skin. He thought about the deep-seated desires she’d been taught to suppress, the things she’d never allow herself to want because she’d been taught that wanting them was wrong.
And he thought about how good it felt to have her hand in his, her body warm against him, the taste of her still on his lips.
He had power he didn’t fully understand. And for the first time in years, he had hope.
