A Mind Controller’s Guide to Happiness

By CerberusMC

Chapter 1 Discovery

It was the second month of college, and Sam was already feeling like he didn’t belong. He had been a loner in high school, constantly bullied and ignored, and he had hoped that things would be different in college. But so far, he was just as invisible as ever.

He spent his days in class, trying to blend in with the background, and his weekends working at the small bookstore on the corner of Main Street. It was a quiet job, and Sam liked it that way. He could escape into the world of books and forget about his own problems for a little while.

Sam’s parents were wealthy but emotionally distant. They were always travelling for business or pleasure, and they never seemed to have time for their son. Sam grew up feeling like an afterthought in their lives, and he learned to rely on himself.

When he graduated from high school, he knew he couldn’t stay in his parents’ house any longer. He needed to be on his own, to make his own way in the world. He found a room to rent in a quiet neighbourhood, owned by a sweet old lady named Mrs Jenkins. She was lonely and wanted some company, so she charged him very little rent. Sam was grateful for her kindness, and he tried to be a good tenant.

Sam didn’t mind his job at the bookstore. It was peaceful, and he liked being surrounded by books. But sometimes, he felt like there must be more to life than this. He had no real friends, no one to share his thoughts and feelings with. He often felt like he was going through the motions, day after day, with no real purpose.

Jill was the owner of the bookstore, and Sam couldn’t help but be a little bit in awe of her. She was beautiful, with long blonde hair falling in soft waves down her back and a warm smile that could light up a room. Sam had heard from some of the other customers that she was a lesbian, and he could see that she was in a committed relationship with a woman named Susan, who was a police officer with long dark hair and a serious demeanour.

Sam had often found himself daydreaming about Jill, imagining what it would be like to be with her. But he knew it was just a fantasy. Jill had never shown any interest in him, and he knew she was completely devoted to Susan. He tried to push his feelings aside and focus on his work, but sometimes it was hard to concentrate when she was around.

Jill had been kind to hire him, even though he had no experience working in a bookstore. She had seen something in him, maybe a love of books, and had given him a chance. Sam was grateful to her, and he worked hard to be a good employee. But sometimes, he couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like if things were different between them.

Sam’s lack of success with girls was a sore spot. He had always been shy and awkward around them, and he had never had a girlfriend. He had tried a few times to ask girls out, but they had always turned him down, often cruelly or dismissively. He had started to believe he was unlovable, that something fundamentally wrong with him made girls not want to be with him.

He had tried to focus on other things, like his studies and his job, but sometimes it was hard not to feel lonely. He would see couples walking down the street, holding hands and laughing, and he would feel a pang of envy. He wondered what it would be like to have someone to share his life with, someone who loved him for who he was.

Sam’s life was a routine of school, work, and solitude. He spent his days studying history at college, trying to absorb as much knowledge as he could. He found the subject fascinating, and he hoped that one day he could make a career out of it.

But for now, he had to work at the bookstore on weekends to pay his rent and buy food. His parents sent him a small allowance, but it wasn’t enough to live on. He was grateful to Mrs Jenkins for keeping his rent low, but he still struggled to make ends meet.

He received emails from his parents every so often, but they were always brief and to the point. They never asked about his life or how he was feeling, just whether he was still alive and if he needed anything. Sam had never felt loved by his parents, and he had learned not to expect anything from them.

Growing up, he had often been left with a babysitter in the evenings while his parents went out to socialise. He had felt like a burden to them, like they didn’t really want him around. He had learned to be independent at a young age, to take care of himself and not rely on others for anything.

The summer after Sam graduated from high school, he was involved in a freak accident. One day, while walking to work, a sudden gas explosion rocked the street. The force of the blast knocked him off his feet and sent him flying across the road. When he hit the ground, he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head.

He was rushed to the hospital, where doctors discovered that a small shard of metal had embedded itself in the back of his skull and pierced his brain. It was a miracle that he had survived the explosion at all, and even more of a miracle that the shard hadn’t caused any serious damage.

The doctors took X-rays and ran a series of tests to assess the extent of his injuries. They found that the shard had missed the most vital parts of his brain, and that Sam had suffered only minor injuries. However, they were reluctant to remove the shard, as it could cause further damage to his brain. In the end, they decided to leave it in place and monitor him closely for any signs of complications.

Sam’s parents had shown little interest in his well-being during his hospitalisation. They had visited him for a brief five minutes, expressing their relief that he was alive but offering little in the way of comfort or . Sam was used to their emotional distance, but it still hurt to feel so alone when he needed them most.

He spent several weeks in the hospital, recovering from his injuries. No one visited him, and he spent most of his time reading books and watching TV. It was a lonely, depressing time, and he often wondered if he would ever feel like himself again.

But one bright spot in his recovery stood out. He received a card from Jill, the owner of the bookstore where he worked. The card was simple, just a get-well message, but it meant a lot to Sam. It was the first time someone had shown him kindness and concern since the accident. She also told him that he could take as much time off as he needed to recover, and that his job would be waiting for him when he was ready to come back.

After two months of recovery, Sam returned to work at the bookstore. He still had headaches and occasional dizziness, but he was eager to get back to some sense of normalcy.

He had pinned Jill’s get-well card to the wall above his desk, a small reminder of the kindness she had shown him during his recovery. He noticed she seemed genuinely concerned for his well-being, checking in throughout the day and making sure he took breaks when he needed them.

For the most part, things at the bookstore carried on as they had before the accident. Sam went about his duties, organising books, helping customers, and restocking shelves. But he couldn’t help but notice that his headaches seemed to be getting worse. They came on suddenly, often when he was feeling angry or frustrated, or when he was concentrating too hard on a task.

When college had started, Sam had held onto the hope that things would be different. He had thought he might make new friends, find a sense of belonging, and maybe even meet someone special. But as the weeks went by, he realised that nothing had really changed. He was still just as much of a loner as he had been in high school, still struggling to connect with others and make a place for himself in the world.

He tried not to let it get to him, throwing himself into his studies and his work at the bookstore. But sometimes, the loneliness and the feeling of being an outsider were overwhelming. He would look around at the other students, laughing and chatting with their friends, and wonder what he was doing wrong. Why couldn’t he be like them?

One day, after a particularly rough week at college, Sam was cycling to work. His mind was elsewhere, and he wasn’t paying as much attention to the road as he should have been. Suddenly, a large, beefy man stepped out in front of him, and Sam had to swerve to avoid hitting him. In doing so, he lost control of his bike and crashed onto the sidewalk.

The man was furious, screaming at Sam that he wasn’t watching where he was going, even though it had been his own fault for stepping out into the road without looking. Sam tried to apologise, but the man wasn’t having it. He kept yelling at Sam, his face turning red with anger.

Sam felt a familiar headache coming on. But this time, something was different. His vision blurred, and he felt a strange energy pulsing behind his eyes. Without really thinking about it, he glared at the man and said, “Calm down.”

To his surprise, the man immediately stopped shouting and looked confused. Sam took advantage of the moment to pick up his bike and apologise again before attempting to leave. But as he was walking away, the man called out to him, “I was a dick, sorry. Please be careful.”

Sam was taken aback. He had never had anyone apologise to him like that before, especially not after they had been so angry. He didn’t understand what had just happened, but he didn’t want to stick around to find out. He muttered an okay and quickly made his way to work.

Sam couldn’t shake the strange encounter from his mind. The man’s sudden change in behaviour was baffling, and he couldn’t help but wonder if he had something to do with it. He brushed it off as a fluke, but deep down, he knew that something strange had happened. His headaches had never caused anything like that before.

Jill greeted Sam with her usual warm smile when he arrived at the bookstore. She could tell that something was off, and she asked him if he was okay. Sam mentioned the crazy man on the street and the strange encounter, but he didn’t go into too much detail. He didn’t want to sound crazy himself.

Jill listened intently, a look of concern on her face. She suggested that Sam take it easy for the rest of the day and that if he needed to talk, she was there. Sam nodded, grateful for her kindness. He got to work, trying to focus on the tasks at hand and forget about the bizarre incident that had happened earlier. But deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something strange was going on, and he couldn’t help but wonder if it had something to do with the shard of metal still lodged in his brain.

The rest of the day went smoothly, and before Sam knew it, it was closing time. Jill told him to lock up and that she would see him tomorrow. She gave him a friendly, pitying smile, and Sam watched as she left the store and walked down the street.

After finishing his closing duties, Sam started toward home. As he was walking, he heard a woman scream in the distance. Being at the back of the building, he couldn’t see what was happening, but he felt a surge of adrenaline and knew he had to investigate.

He ran towards the sound of the scream, and as he turned the corner, he saw a woman struggling with a man. She was trying to fight him off, but he was too strong. Sam didn’t hesitate. He ran towards them and yelled, “Hey, leave her alone!”

Sam’s punch was weak, but it was enough to distract the man from his original target. The man turned his attention to Sam and punched him hard, knocking him to the ground. “So you want to in, do you?” he shouted before kicking Sam in the ribs.

Sam’s headache returned with a vengeance, and he felt a surge of rage. He couldn’t let this man get away with hurting him and the woman. As the man kept kicking him, Sam’s eyes started to glow silver again. He glared up at the man and growled, “Stop it!”

The man and the woman both froze, as if they were waiting for Sam’s next command. His eyes still glowing, Sam looked at the man and said, “Go to the police station and turn yourself in.” He then turned to the woman and said, “Report him and then go home and rest.”

Without a word, the man and the woman both turned and walked away in opposite directions, as if they were in a trance. Sam watched them go, still feeling the strange energy pulsing through him.

He didn’t understand what had just happened, but he knew that he had somehow been able to control their actions. It was as if the shard of metal in his head had given him some kind of power. He was both scared and intrigued by this newfound ability, and he knew that he needed to figure out what was going on.

As Sam lay in bed, he couldn’t stop thinking about what had happened. He had somehow controlled two people, and he needed to know if it was just a fluke or if he really had some power.

He decided he needed to test it again to see if he could replicate it. But he also knew that he needed to be careful. He didn’t want to hurt anyone or use his power for evil.

Over the next few days, Sam tried to use his power in small ways. He would focus his mind and try to make small things happen, like making a pencil roll off a desk or making a plant move. At first, nothing happened, and he started to think that maybe it had just been a one-time thing. But then, one day, he was walking down the street, and he saw a woman struggling to carry a heavy bag. He focused his mind and said, “Let me help you with that,” and to his surprise, the woman handed him the bag without even thinking about it.

Sam was thrilled. He knew that he had some power, and he wanted to explore it further. But he also knew that he needed to be careful. He didn’t want to attract the wrong kind of attention or use his power for the wrong reasons. He decided to keep experimenting, but in secret.

As Sam continued to test his newfound power, he came across an article in the local newspaper about the incident with the man who had assaulted the woman. The article described how the man had suddenly turned himself in to the police, and how the woman had reported the assault. The police were baffled by the man’s sudden change of heart, and they were investigating the incident further.

Sam couldn’t help but feel pride and satisfaction. He had stopped a dangerous man and helped a woman in need. He knew that he had used his power for good, and it felt amazing.

But at the same time, he was also scared. He didn’t know the limits of his power, or what would happen if people found out. He knew that he needed to be careful and to keep his abilities a secret, at least for now.

As he continued to explore his power, Sam couldn’t help but wonder what other possibilities lay ahead. Could he use his power to help more people? Could he make a real difference in the world? Only time would tell, but for now, Sam was content to keep experimenting and learning more about the strange abilities that had been awakened within him.
