Description
Sabine Bijoux is about to experience her night to forget.
“This is Sabine Bijoux. Oh hi Carmen, why didn’t you call my cell?”
“I tried your cell for a couple of hours. It keeps going to voicemail.”
Sabine picks up her phone. All evidence demonstrates the battery died. “Oh that’s strange, it’s right here on my desk, I never heard it ring. Are you sure you dialed the correct number?”
Carmen knows her sister’s lying, she knows her tell. “I’m sure I got the number right, you’re on my list. You should probably get your phone checked out.”
“Yeah, I’ll get right on that. What is the nature of your urgent call?”
“I just thought it would be good to check in with you before I click send on my Craigslist ad to rent out your room.”
Sabine glances at the cot in the corner. “Can I let you know tomorrow?”
“Sabine! No, you don’t get to think about it. You’ve been sleeping in your office so long that a family of squirrels managed to break into your bedroom, and they’ve been stashing nuts under your pillow. I’m coming to pick you up tonight.”
Sabine stretches her arms, she’s been sitting in her chair so long, her derrière is swollen. “It’s fine, one more night won’t kill me.”
“Sabine, I’m leaving now, I’ll be there in an hour.”
Sabine rolls her eyes and sighs. “Ok, when you get to the building just to buzz me so I can let you in. Eighteenth floor, , take the express elevator. Security has probably left for the night. So don’t let the boogeyman get you.”
Carmen laughs. “I’ll be fine, I’m a big girl now. It’s my sister I’m worried about.”
Sabine goes back to dictating a message to her . “Send a memo to Andy Stevens. Tell him that I submitted my request for bonuses for my team, it will be in his inbox. He’ll want some justification so that the C suite won’t push back. Tell him… tell him my team worked their asses off for eighteen months on the proposal and that the fifty-million-dollar contract is guaranteed. Tell him all of that word for word. That way he’ll know it came directly from me. He more than anyone, knows better than to cross me.”
SWOOSH
Sabine thinks she heard something. She gets up from her desk and walks to the door. She looks through the glass and doesn’t see anything.
MEOW
“What the fuck! Who are you? How did you get in here?”
SWOOSH
Sabine blinks, the woman sitting in her chair appears to have vaporized into the mist.
A woman’s voice whispers in her ear. “Well I was over there, now I’m over here. I don’t recall being in anywhere.”
“That was weird,” Sabine says to herself. “I think I need more coffee, I must be dreaming.”
“Dreaming? That would not have been my first guess, maybe more of a trip down Elm Street. Did you know Freddy is one of my kind? You don’t need to answer, just something for you to think about.”
Sabine tries to turn away, the woman floats with her.
“Who am I? Are you sure you want to know?” The woman snaps her finger. “Wake up, Earth to Sabine. I know how it is, I have the effect of leaving your kind speechless. If you really must know. Those who have any common sense call me Astrid. Those who don’t… I call them breakfast… though mostly a late night snack. Leaving them forever senseless.”
Astrid swipes her tongue over her lips and smiles. “Would you like to play?”
Sabine’s pulls her chin in. “I don’t understand.”
“?Yalp ot ekil uoy dluow.”
Sabine shakes her head. “Yalpota what?”
SWOOSH
Astrid is back in Sabine’s chair. “With an office like this, my lowest expectation is that you would understand first grade English. Do…. you… want… to…. Play…. ?”
“Play? I don’t have time for that, I’m working.”
“Oh, well that’s unfortunate I have all the time in the known universe. I was just hoping to be able to take you…. for a test drive. You know, to see if you’re my type. Are you a screamer or do you purr when you cum? Frankly my preferences are those who have a scream to Jesus moment when they climax, but I know it’s a personal taste. Which by the way, you smell quite tasty. Quite as in very, I haven’t lived in the UK, for oh about a century or two.”
“What… is this?”
“You’re interrupting, I wasn’t finished. I was talking about tasty women. The finest morsels I’ve found were in Australia. Did you know below the equator the ocean currents flow in the opposite direction?”
“I think you mean the drains.”
“Are you talking back? That’s not polite, especially when you are hosting a guest. Well whatever, I really wasn’t paying too much attention to the circulation of water. My focus was on Ginger, she was a lovely maiden, with gorgeous locks of hair matching her name. What are you working on? Oh this is interesting. You’re not working. You’re waiting… For your sister. Oh joy this is going to be so much fun.”
“I didn’t say that, I don’t know where you got that idea.”
“You thunk it, which is even better than saying it.”
“Are you reading my mind?”
Astrid rolls her eyes. “Come on you got world geography for a hundred right. And you still haven’t figured out what I am. You look tired to me, are you getting sleepy. No don’t answer, you are sleepy, so go ahead… sleep.”
Sabine drops to the floor. Astrid looks down on her, “Oh sorry about that, I assumed you would have a better dismount. We’ll need to work on that.”
Sabine starts snoring.
Astrid looks at her nails and gives an approving nod. “Still perfect. You know what? I once knew a Beauty, and it wasn’t an apple that put her to sleep. It wouldn’t be proper for me to reveal our secrets, but just saying, I might have had something to do with her situation.”
Astrid rolls her eyes. “Oh my dark angel, you’re still asleep, don’t worry I know the ritual.”
Astrid leans over and kisses Sabine causing her eyes to pop open. “You know in the tradition of the tale, you and I are married now. After your sister gets here, we’ll decide whether or not it’s happily ever after.”
Sabine shivers.
“Are you getting cold? Looks to me like you’re getting bored. Do you have any dice?”
Sabine shakes her head.
“Well done, you rolled a seven. Let me check the rule book, here it is on page three-thousand-two-hundred and sixty-nine. Your next move in our game, is to stand right here, at attention, eyes forward. Don’t try to cheat because I’ll catch you. And well, you won’t go and you won’t collect fifty-million-dollars. Oh my, where did that thought come from? I better go look and see what other secrets you have hidden in your desk.”
Sabine whimpers as tears begin to fall. “Please…”
“Well thank you, though I never need your permission. Let’s see what we have…”
“Why are you doing this to me?” Sabine cries.
Astrid is immediately in her face. “You’re interrupting me yet again. Oh I have an idea. Your wildest fantasy, your go to, anytime you are engaged in a self-service honeymoon, has always been for a stranger to rifle through your desk looking for your secrets. And you just now realized you can move your hand. That should keep you occupied for a bit. I’m playful, I’m not cruel after all.”
Sabine begins to moan.
Astrid is back in Sabine’s chair pulling open the first drawer. “Nothing fun in here. Reminds me of the contestant who chooses door number three and finds a wheelbarrow inside. Let’s see what we have behind door number one. Oh this is interesting. Were these a gift from someone? Or one you’re planning to give away to someone special? Real diamonds too. Though I hate to be the bearer of bad news. These are only point eight-six-two-seven and not a full carat. Lovely earrings though.”
Sabine is making cat sounds.
Astrid pulls open another drawer. “Reading material. Boring… boring.. oh this one was fun. I wasn’t expecting the psychologist to be the killer. Though poison as the murder weapon lacked creativity in my opinion. Oh no! This one is offensive. A vegan lifestyle!, seriously!? There is so much I need to teach you. But don’t worry before you know it you’ll be thinking correctly with a brand new appetite.”
Sabine is getting aroused.
Astrid looks directly at Sabine. “Oh what do we have here? This drawer is locked, and it appears your pants will require a visit to the cleaners.”
Sabine is vibrating.
Astrid pulls the front of the drawer off. “Yummy the good stuff. Nice collection of pleasure wands. Tell me does latex work for you? For me, I much prefer the hard surface variety. Were you ever able to get the little G spot probe to work on this one? I can’t wait to introduce you to Cameron. I altered her thoughts and convinced her she was an inventor. She can work magic with a vibrator. Oh my, she’s amazing.”
“Oh darn, you don’t have any whips in here.”
“Why did you suddenly start thinking about Andrew Stevens or as you prefer to call him, Andy?”
Sabine shakes her head. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Oh joy, handcuffs! Consider your kinks Astrid approved. But I can’t seem to find any thumbscrews. I’ll need to teach you how to put together a proper kit.”
“Come over here for a minute.”
Sabine tries to move but she can’t.
“Oops sorry, I release you by the power invested in me, to get your ass over here. That’s better. Now tell me what’s on this USB stick I found taped on top of the drawer.”
Sabine looks surprised. “I’ve never seen it before.”
“Oh that makes perfect sense. Did I catch you in someone else’s office snooping around?”
Sabine shakes her head.
“Get on your knees, I’m given you a reward for lying to me. Just try your best not to slobber, just think of my clit as an ice cream cone and your job is to lick up the melted cream.”
“Oh cool, this file’s encrypted, what’s the ?”
Astrid winks. “Seriously? 123P!zz@?”
“ya dent ow.”
Astrid smirks and lifts up Sabine’s chin. “You can stop licking for a second. Good now speak.”
“I didn’t tell you anything.”
“Do we really need to go over that again? You humans, I believe you’ve evolved to dumb. One… two… three… go back to licking.”
“This document is marked confidential. You stole it, didn’t you. Now the fifty-million-dollars makes sense. Good girl!”
“Almost done. Can you believe it? Frankly I can’t. I was hoping to find so much more and all you have here are trinkets.”
Astrid reaches for the middle drawer. “You might have thought this would have been drawer number one. Not so, the middle drawer is where the most precious secrets are stored. To keep them close.”
Astrid looks inside. “No.”
“No what?”
“You really shouldn’t have kissed Rachel.”
Sabine goes pale. “That was fifteen years ago.”
“Yes, and she still thinks about it on Thursdays. Scissors?”
Astrid sees the red light flashing on the phone and looks at the video. “Oh yay! Little sis is here, and oh my dragon’s breath, she’s cute. Blonde hair too. She reminds me of my number three, or maybe more like number seven. I hate to play favorites anyway. They all have their own unique flavor. And maybe, just maybe if this one’s a screamer. I’ll share the gift… but just maybe. Let’s not make rash decisions. Have you fallen asleep again? You know you really need to get more rest. And don’t forget your eight glasses of water every day. Does wonders for your blood flow.”
Astrid smiles. “I hear footsteps. This is going to be so much fun. Your sister will be here in three… two… one…
Astrid extends her hand. “Hi Carmen! I’m happy to meet you, your sister has told me so much about you.” Astrid looks directly into Carmen’s eyes. “You trust me.” Carmen mouths the words.
“My name is Dr. Astrid Simonson. Sabine’s manager, Andrew Stevens called me because they are concerned about your sister. She’s been working on an important project and despite Mr. Stevens’ insistence, she refuses to sleep.”
Carmen nods. “I’m so glad they called you. I’ve been having the same challenge with Sabine, her bed hasn’t been slept in for months.”
“Don’t listen to her Carmen, this woman is a monster. Just before you got here she was acting like a lunatic. I thought she was going to kill me.”
Carmen hugs her sister. “Sabine, don’t be like that, she’s here to help. We all are. I thought you would kill yourself working so hard. Please take care of her doctor, ever since our mom died, she’s the only family I have left. Mom left us her home and now we even live together.”
“I’m trying my best, but you see how she is. She’s clearly exhausted, poor thing. I am really just here to calm her down until the police arrive.”
Carmen is shocked. “The police? Why would the police be coming here.”
“I’m truly sorry to be the one to tell you, but Sabine is being arrested. I don’t know the details, something about corporate espionage. It’s not important now, I’m only concerned with Sabine’s care. Whatever she’s been arrested for, that can all be worked out... eventually”
A teardrop rolls off Carmen’s cheek. “Sabine, I forgive you for abandoning me and all the sleepless nights you caused me from worrying about you. And my best friend Cindy has a neighbor who knows someone whose daughter just entered law school. I’m sure she could help you with your legal problems.”
“She’s a bitch, all lies, I haven’t done anything wrong. I’ve worked my ass off for a fifty-million-dollar contract. Stevens promised me a luxury cruise. Don’t listen to her. Please this woman is dangerous.”
Astrid whispers into Carmen’s ear. “Don’t look down, I don’t want you to be embarrassed. Tell Sabine you need to go to the toilet. Insist that I come with you. I have some special surgical wipes. I’ll get you all cleaned up.”
“Sabine I need to go relieve myself. Dr. Astrid can you please come with me?”
Sabine screams “Carmen NOOOOOOOOO! Don’t go with her.”
Astrid takes Carmen’s hand. “I’m going to need to lock the door. If she gets out she might hurt herself and nobody wants to see that happen.”
Carmen and Astrid disappear down the hall. “So, do you scream or do you purr…”
Sabine stares out the window. She’s desperate but not enough to jump. She hears the door open.
Carmen is draped over Astrid’s shoulder, she’s nuzzling Astrid’s neck. Her hair has that I just came and it was fun look.
“Oh what a relief Carmen you’re back. What happened to your hair?”
Carmen squeezes into Astrid. “She’s scary, who’s Carmen?”
“Carmen! I’m Sabine your sister.”
“Isn’t this so adorable. Reminds me of stupid pet tricks.”
Sabine throws her hands up. “What does that have to do with anything?”
“Oh nothing, just a random thought. A therapist tried to help me with my focus. Oh look, your nipple is leaking. Are you…?”
“Your sister loves you very much. She can’t your name.”
Sabine stares at her.
“Purple used to be extraordinarily expensive.”
“What?”
“Nothing. Your blouse reminded me. Where were we?”
“Oh that’s right, you wanted to do a thought experiment.”
“No I didn’t, I want my sister back.”
“Stifle your thoughts…” Astrid claps her hands. “Well done, I only read static now.”
Sabine tries to sit down and misses the floor.
Astrid snaps her fingers. “I’d call that experiment a success. You can think again.”
“When your sister and I spent some personal time together two things led to four things. She enjoyed the static in her head, that’s when I learned how loud she could scream.”
“I can hear the thoughts in your head, you crave for all your stress to be relieved. You’re begging me to do the same for you.”
“You’re lying, I never had those thoughts.”
“Oh now, I’m offended. When have I ever told a lie? Oh forget it, I forgive you.”
Sabine glares. “You’re a bitch!”
“Thanks for the compliment. You still don’t get the static unfortunately. Your sister forgot she even has a home. So I need you to show me my new home in your basement.”
Sabine puts her hands over her ears. “I’m done, you’re a monster.”
Astrid laughs. “Like that’s gonna work. I can put thoughts in your head just as easy as I can read them. Like this one…”
Sabine’s eyes open wide.
