Chapter 9 — The Lesson
“Show me how to use it.”
The words hung in the air between them. Greg felt his mouth go dry, his cock already stirring in his jeans. She was sitting on the couch, the pale pink vibrator cupped in her palm like something fragile, her eyes dark and steady.
He sat down next to her, close enough that his thigh pressed against hers. He reached out and took the toy from her hand—it was lightweight, the silicone smooth and warm from her skin. There was a single button on the base. He pressed it.
The vibrator hummed to life, a low, steady buzz that vibrated up through his fingers. Her breath caught.
“That’s the lowest setting,” he said. He pressed the button again. The pitch shifted, the hum deepening. “That’s medium. One more for high.”
He cycled through all three settings and then turned it off, the silence rushing back in. Her eyes hadn’t left the toy.
The silence that followed was heavy with the weight of what they were about to do. A week ago he wouldn’t have believed this moment possible. They’d talked — really talked, for the first time in years — about the quiet routine they’d fallen into, the way the wanting had faded into something dutiful. She’d been the one to say it out loud: she didn’t want to feel like his roommate anymore. She wanted to feel like his wife.
The toy had arrived in the mail that afternoon. She’d found the package, turned it over in her hands, and asked him what it was. He’d told her the truth — that he’d bought it for her, that he’d wanted to ask for months, that he’d been afraid she’d say no.
She’d said yes.
“Can I feel it?” she asked.
“Where?”
“My hand. I just want to know what it feels like.”
He handed it to her. She pressed the button, and the vibrator started humming again on low. She held it in her palm, her fingers wrapping around it, and he watched her face change as the vibration traveled up her arm—curiosity, surprise, something that might have been the beginning of want.
“It’s not weird,” she said. “I thought it would feel weird.”
“What does it feel like?”
“Tingly.” She pressed it against her forearm, and her eyebrows lifted. “That’s—that’s actually nice.”
“See? Nothing to be scared of.”
“I wasn’t scared.” But she had been — he could see it in the careful way she held the toy, the way she’d turned it over in her palm like it might bite. “I just never thought I’d be the kind of woman who asked for something like this.”
“What kind of woman is that?”
She looked at him, and for a moment she was twenty-two again, the girl who’d blushed through her own wedding night. “The kind who wants things. I was raised to believe a wife shouldn’t need toys or tricks — that if you loved somebody, that was supposed to be enough.” She pressed her lips together. “I’ve been trying to unlearn that for a while.”
“And?”
“I think I’m getting there.” She lifted the vibrator, testing its weight. “I asked for this. That’s something, isn’t it?”
“That’s everything.” He took her hand and folded her fingers around the silicone. “There’s nothing wrong with wanting, Toni. Nothing wrong with asking. I want you to know that.”
She held his gaze, something shifting behind her eyes. Then she pressed the toy against her forearm again, firmer this time, and let the hum travel up her arm until her shoulders loosened.
“Imagine that on your clit.”
Her breath hitched and color flooded her cheeks. She didn’t look away from the toy, but he saw her thighs press together, a small, unconscious motion.
“Show me,” she said again, quieter this time.
Greg stood up and offered her his hand. She took it, and he pulled her to her feet. He led her toward the bedroom, the vibrator still in her hand, her fingers wrapped around it like she was afraid to let go.
The bedroom was dim, the lamp on the nightstand casting a warm glow across the sheets. He stopped beside the bed and turned to face her.
“Take your clothes off.”
She hesitated for half a second—not reluctance, just the weight of being looked at—and then she reached for the hem of her shirt and pulled it over her head. Her bra followed, then her jeans and underwear, until she was standing naked in front of him, her skin honeyed in the lamplight, her nipples already hard.
She stood there letting him look, her arms at her sides, a faint tremor in her hands. Modesty was a habit she’d never quite broken — she still reached for the covers first, still turned her back to undress. But tonight she held still under his gaze, her chin lifted, her breath coming shallow.
“You’re beautiful,” he said. It came out rough.
“You have to say that. You’re my husband.”
“I’m also a man with eyes. You’re beautiful.”
“Your turn,” she said.
He stripped faster, less ceremony, and when he was naked and hard, his cock standing thick against his stomach, she looked at it and then at the toy in her hand, and she laughed.
“Are you jealous?”
“Of a piece of silicone?” He stepped closer, his hands finding her waist. “No. I’m grateful. It means I get to watch.”
He guided her onto the bed, onto her back, her head on the pillow and her knees bent, feet flat on the mattress. She was open to him, her thighs parted, the pink flesh of her cunt glistening with the first signs of wetness. He could smell her—warm and clean and female.
He almost said something then — how beautiful she looked, how brave. But the words would have been too big for the room. Instead he ran his thumb along her inner thigh, and she shivered.
“Last chance to change your mind,” he said. It came out softer than he’d meant it.
“I don’t want to change my mind.” Her voice was steady. “I want you to show me. All of it.”
He leaned down and kissed the inside of her knee. “Then I will.”
He took the vibrator from her hand and pressed the button. Low. The hum filled the quiet room.
“Just relax,” he said. “I’m going to start slow.”
He traced the toy along her inner thigh, the silicone cool against her skin, and she shivered. He dragged it higher, circling her hipbone, skipping over her cunt to trace the crease of her other thigh. She squirmed, her hips lifting slightly, chasing the sensation.
“Greg.”
“I know what you want. Let me take my time.”
He watched her face — the way her lips parted, the way her hips chased the vibration even as she tried to hold still. She’d never learned to ask for what she wanted. But her body had no such shame. It tilted toward the pleasure like a plant toward light, even when her mouth stayed quiet.
He made a few more circuits around her pussy, never directly touching it but the vibrations reached it nonetheless.
He brought the vibrator to her clit. The moment the silicone touched her—light, barely there, just the edge of the vibration—her whole body jerked, a sharp gasp escaping her throat.
“Oh—fuck.”
“Good?”
She nodded, her eyes squeezed shut, her hands gripping the sheets.
He pressed it firmer, and her hips bucked. The sound she made was raw—high and broken, her teeth sinking into her lower lip. He circled her clit with the toy, slow and deliberate, watching the way her stomach tightened and her thighs trembled.
“You’re so wet,” he said. “Listen.”
He pulled the vibrator away for a second and pressed it against her entrance, dragging it through the slick that had gathered there making a squelching sound as it did. The silicone came away glistening. He showed her, holding it up so she could see.
“That’s you. That’s how much you want this.”
Her eyes were glassy. “Please. Please put it inside me.”
“No. Not yet.”
He brought the vibrator back to her clit, and this time he didn’t tease. He pressed the flat of the toy against her, the full vibration hitting her clit directly, and she cried out—a real cry, her back arching off the bed, her hands flying to his wrist.
“Oh god—oh god, Greg —”
“I know. I’ve got you. Let it happen.”
Her hips worked against the toy in small, frantic circles, her heels digging into the mattress. He watched the muscles of her stomach clench and release, watched the flush climb her chest. A year ago she’d have called this undignified. Now she was chasing her own pleasure with both hands, and the sight of it undid something in him.
He kept the pressure steady, circling her clit in tight, relentless movements. Her breathing turned ragged, her hips rocking against the toy, her mouth open and her eyes screwed shut.
“Look at me.”
She forced her eyes open. They were dark, unfocused, pupils blown wide.
“I want to watch you come,” he said. “I want to see your face when it happens.”
He pressed the vibrator more firmly against her. Her hand clamped around his wrist, not pulling him away but holding him there, anchoring herself. Her mouth opened but no sound came out, her body going rigid, her thighs clamping around his hand.
“Let me see, Toni. Let go of it.”
She came apart. Her orgasm hit her like a wave, her whole body shaking, a sound finally tearing from her throat—his name, stretched into something that was almost a sob.
He kept the vibrator on her clit through the aftershocks, watching her face twist and release, watching the flush spread across her chest. Only when her body went slack did he lift the toy away and set it on the nightstand.
She made a sound — small, wrecked — and her hands came up to cover her face.
“Hey.” He leaned over her. “You okay?”
She nodded against her palms, then laughed, a wet, shaky sound. “I didn’t know. I didn’t know it could be like that.”
“Like what?”
She lowered her hands. Her eyes were glassy, the corners bright. “Like my whole body was in it. Not just down there. All of me.” She looked at him, wonder and gratitude moving through her face. “I’ve been missing this my whole life. I just didn’t know it.”
He leaned down and kissed her — soft, slow, her mouth still open and panting against his.
“Good?” he asked against her lips.
She laughed, breathless. “You have no idea.”
He kissed her again, and then he moved over her, his cock pressing against her wet thigh. She reached down on her own and guided him to her entrance, already so slick that he slid in to the hilt in one smooth motion. Her head fell back, a long, low moan spilling from her throat.
“Fuck, you’re so deep.” Her voice cracked. “Right there.”
He fucked her slow, deep, still watching her face, still riding the high of what he’d just watched. She wrapped her legs around his waist and pulled him deeper, her hands in his hair, her mouth on his neck.
“You’re going to make me come again,” she said against his skin.
“Good. Do it.”
He reached between them and pressed the flat of his palm against her clit, grinding down with each thrust. She came again, faster this time, her inner walls clenching around his cock, and that was what pushed him over—her body gripping him, her voice in his ear, begging him to fill her.
He came hard, a low sound rumbling in his chest as his hips faltered, his release pulsing deep inside her. She held him through it, her legs still wrapped around him, her fingers tracing patterns on his back.
When he finally rolled off her, they lay side by side, breathing hard, the vibrator forgotten on the sheets beside them.
She found his hand and squeezed it.
“I think I understand now,” she said.
“Understand what?”
“Why you wanted this. Why you wanted me to try.” She turned her head to look at him, her face soft and open in the dim light. “It’s not about the toy. It’s about not being afraid anymore.”
He pulled her closer, her head fitting into the curve of his shoulder.
“Exactly,” he said.
“I used to think the wanting was the shameful part,” she said, her voice muffled against his skin. “That if I wanted too much — or asked for it — it made me less. Less of a wife. Less of a woman.”
“Toni.”
“I know. I’m learning.” She propped herself on an elbow, looking down at him. “You did this. You made it safe to want things.”
His throat closed. She was unknowingly close to the truth. He’d made himself into something he wasn’t, opened her mind to different thinking, one sentence at a time, and here she was thanking him for a courage that was half his and half graphite on paper. “You did the hard part,” he said. “I just asked.”
She studied his face, then bent and kissed the corner of his mouth. “Then I’m glad you asked.”
She pressed a kiss to his chest, and they lay there in the quiet, the weight of the night settling around them.
He woke during the night. Toni was in a deep satisfied sleep. As silently as possible he went downstairs to his office. He retrieved the pencil and the notebook from his desk.
Lately he was often thinking about what the next steps should be. He had been making this all up as he went based on his past experiences and fantasies. As he went forward he had to help her realize her wants as she revealed them. But first, something else for him.
He’d told himself the changes were different — that what he’d done to his own body was a gift he could give her, an upgrade that only made him better at loving her. But standing in the dark with the pencil between his fingers, the lie wore thinner each time. Every sentence made the next one easier to write. And every time she thanked him for something he’d done with words on a page, part of him wanted to confess, and part of him was glad he hadn’t.
Tonight she’d opened herself — really opened — and she’d done it because he’d asked, not because a sentence had made her. The wanting had been there all along, buried under years of being told it was wrong. He’d simply given her room to find it.
Or that was what he told himself.
He stared at the pad for a moment his hand hovering above it. Seemingly on its own it wrote, Toni views anal stimulation and penetration as another source of pleasure. The idea of receiving and providing pleasure anally excites her. She has a very minimal gag reflex.
The words seemed to hang in the air a moment before settling into the page like they’d always been there. His hand was steady. His heart was not.
He’d been careful up to now. Every change considered, every sentence reversible. But this one was different. This one reached into her — rewired the architecture of what she wanted — and she would never know to ask for it back.
He told himself it was a gift. He almost believed it.
After a moment he added, The 3rd stair does not squeak.
He closed the notebook and returned it and the pencil to its home.
As he left his office he drew a deep breath, held it then released it. The weight of his actions melting away as he climbed the stairs and slipped silently back into bed.
The stair did not squeak when he stepped on it.
