Andy’s leg jiggled compulsively as he sat outside the psychologist’s office. Was he really about to see the college psychologist to get an extension for a paper? He was the best student in the school. He was the best student in the goddamn state. He’d graduated valedictorian from his high school. He was sitting with a 3.7 GPA. He knew more than some of the adjunct professors on his intro to psych course, for crying out loud.

The thing was, he thought pushing his glasses up his nose, when you’ve got such a good rep, that it starts to precede you. He’d shown himself to be of an academic caliber significantly higher than that of his classmates. He, frankly, was making everyone else look bad.

And then there was the lit paper.

Andy hated his lit class. He had taken it almost as a joke, an easy A, a cruise class. Something to pad the old academic record while he worked on his sciences. He’d been shocked and awed to discover the rigor of the professor in that class. Beckett, Sartre, Camus. They broke him. He just didn’t get it. It was nonsense. It was stupid. Two hobos waiting around for someone who never came. A guy shooting a guy just because he could. Hell being full of just other people. For Andy, each class was an exercise in pulling teeth. So, he got bored of the subject and half of the assignments, his attention fading in class, his attendance to lectures diminishing.

And now he was nearly late with a paper that he hadn’t even started yet.

There had been only one solution. Dr. Lovelace.

Doctor Paula Lovelace, the school counselor, therapist, psychologist. A tall, imposing woman who caught the eye of everyone on campus. Rumor had it that she would write extensions for students if they could convince her that they weren’t well or too stressed.

It had been Benny that had put him up to it. Benny, his lazy stoner roommate. He could be annoying but he had great insight. Particularly in Lit. How he could get straight A’s in this class, Andy didn’t know, but he sure was chilled out most of the time.

“Dude, go see Lovelace,” Benny had blurted out as Andy tossed his complete works of Beckett across the room in frustration.

“Lovelace?”

“You know, you’ve seen her before,” Benny stated, eyes on the bowl he was filling, bong between his legs. “She’s, like, the tall lady. Office in the issions building. She’s like some sort of revolutionary brain doctor or something.”

Andy watched as his roommate took a heroic, bubbling hit on the bong and exhaled a sweet cloud of smoke into the air.

“She’s like,” Benny continued, curving his hands through the air, “super-sexy. You should go see her. Tell her the stress is, like, too much. She’ll sort you out, bro.”

He offered the bong to Andy, who, as usual, refused it with a simple shake of the head. He’d never done drugs and couldn’t see how it would help right now.

And so here Andy was. Nerves coursed through his chest. He was going to lie to an . He was going to lie to her. He was going to do a bad thing. He was going to cheat.

Andy had never cheated before. He’d always put the time in, studied, made it through his intelligence and hard work. He didn’t have hobbies beyond a mild anime habit and an excessive fantasy habit. He spent his time revising, studying, learning. He didn’t even really have friends, beyond Benny.

But still, he just couldn’t do this.

He couldn’t cheat.

An office was decorated in the faint, beige hues of the university’s brand. It was a room dominated by a desk which the receptionist, a young, svelte blonde with short, yellow-dyed hair, sat behind, typing by hunting and pecking, it looked like it was difficult for her. Her phone rang.

“Dr. Lovelace’s office. Mandi speaking!” She chirped down the line, “Oh, hi Dr. Lovelace! Yep, I’ll send him in!”

She replaced the phone and turned to Andy. As she swiveled round in her chair, he had time to appreciate the voluminous bust she presented him. He couldn’t help but stare, and he got the feeling she wanted him to.

“The doc will see you now!”

Quelling the jiggle in his treacherous leg, Andy rose and headed for the office.
