Let her make her own decisions.

Ashley was determined to stick to that advice, no matter how many times Madison tested her patience. After all, her parents had allowed her the same freedoms, and she turned out okay. A good mother, anyway.

So when Madison decided to study biology at Eastern State instead of finance or law? She’s an adult, let her make her own decisions.

When Madison disappeared for two days after her ‘afternoon’ class trip to Soda Caverns? I’m not a helicopter parent, I’m not, I’m not!

When she came home acting strange and aloof, staying only long enough to grab a few things from her bedroom before dashing off, wordlessly, back to campus? Kids these days!

Besides, Madison was sorry about that. Had said as much, to Ashley’s face, perhaps to their mutual surprise. I’m sorry I’ve been acting so moody, mom. Just under a lot of stress with the new school year.

Ashley understood. She’d been in college once. And grad school. And law school. They really tried to grind you out in those places. Maybe biology was just as tough. She’d never considered it, and felt bad for not doing so.

We found a really cool hidden room at Soda Caverns, mom! Jennifer thinks it might be the only one of its kind in the whole world!

One of Madison’s professors. Madison loved Jennifer. Apparently she was the young, ‘cool’ academic, the kind college sophomores instantly took a shine to. Ashley had known a few. Slept with more than one, not that she’d ever tell her daughter about that.

You wanna come see it? It’ll be fun! We can make it a whole mother-daughter day. Hit the caves, you know, maybe grab some lunch as Parkside Grill, you can order us both a glass of wine…

Not til you’re 21, she reminded Madison. God, that was less than two years away. And then they really would be sharing a bottle of wine at Parkside Grill. And there would be college parties, keg parties, hangovers...

Let her make her own decisions.

“Okay,” she found herself saying. “This isn’t something where we have to crawl on our hands and knees through dirt and mud, is it? I just got my nails done.”

Oh, mom! No, it’s an easy hike in. You just need your hiking boots. Maybe jeans. Nothing fancy. You’re going to love it! It’s amazing!

In the end she went with shorts and a t-shirt, along with the hiking boots. It was a warm fall, and she wasn’t ready to acknowledge the coming winter just yet. Madison compared her favorably to Lara Croft, made an I’m-not-ready-to-hear-that-from-my-daughter comment about her tits, and then, laughing, dragged her nearly half a mile into the biggest cave system Ashley had ever seen.

She was about to suggest turning around—she’d forgotten to pack a lunch, and Parkside Grill was large in her thoughts—when Madison came to an abrupt halt.

Here we are, mom, the girl declared, even though the ‘room’ they were in didn’t look any different than any of the other wideouts they’d ed through. This one had more of the same weird crystals, their soft blue glow casting eerie shadows on the cave walls. They were neat, and Ashley briefly wondered how her life would have gone had she stuck with geology as a major.

The shadows in this room were especially weird. They seemed to move. Not all of them, and not constantly, but every few seconds, always in the corner of her vision. To her annoyance, they would freeze whenever she tried looking at them directly.

There was a hissing noise, too, something just above the level of silence. Ashley was more worried about the hiss than the shadows. It sounded like tricking water—an underground stream, maybe. But the floor was dry as a bone. What if it was gas? Natural gas leaking into the cavern? Did natural gas work that way? A geologist would know.

Could Madison hear the hiss? Ashley turned to ask her, only to find her daughter perched on one of the rocks that jutted up from the cave floor, lifting her t-shirt over her head. She smiled at Ashley like being naked in a cave was the most normal thing in the world.

“Madison!! What the hell are—”

The shadows caught her attention again. She let her anger cool—whatever Madison was doing could wait. The shadows—more numerous than before, and no longer confined to the periphery of her vision—took precedence. With everything else going on, they no longer seemed like a simple curiosity.

She forced herself to look at Madison, trying to ignore the fact that Madison was apparently of the mindset that she could just strip naked in front of her own mother whenever the mood struck her. Was this was they were teaching in schools these days? Was it something she learned from Jennifer?

“Are you seeing these shadows on the walls? You’ve been here before. What’s causing them?” A horrible thought occurred to her. “I think there’s an animal in here with us. Like a bear, or a wolf, or...” It’s fall, it’s a bear getting ready to hibernate.

Madison said nothing, but she clearly saw something. Something that was over her mother’s shoulder and behind her, something that seemed to capture her total attention, as if her mother were just another rock in the cave. Her dopey smile flattened into something closer to a half-frown, her eyes glazing over as if she’d just taken the biggest hit from the world’s biggest bong.

Yes. Something. Something wonderful, Madison replied.

“That’s it.” That’s it. “We’re getting out of here. Put your clothes back on. NOW.“

Madison slipped from her perch and landed on unsteady legs, wobbling, catching the rock behind her to keep her balance. She did not reach for her discarded clothes. The dopey smile returned. She was looking directly at Ashley now.

See, mom? It’s going to feel so good, I promise.

“Maddie! I said, put. Your. Clothes. Back—hurrrrk.”

Something hard and sharp curled itself around her left ear. Another something did the same to her right cheek. Both somethings contracted sharply, simultaneously, followohhhhhhhh uhhhhhnnnn

One of us. You are Hive. You are one of us. You are Hive. Submit. Surrender. Obey. One of us. You are Hive. You are one of us. You are Hive.

She was one of them. She was Hive.

Them? Hive? No, no, this is wrong, Madison help please help something’s attacking your mom get it off me Maddie please help get it off meeeeee…

She tried to turn her head, but the thing Hive Hive Hive held it firmly in place, forcing her to stare at the wall. It hissed. The hissing no longer frightened her.

Something tickled her left leg. Then her right, a little higher up. She understood what it was without even thinking, certainly without reacting.

No! Don’t let it do... do... I w-want... I want this. I want this. I want this. Hive. Obey. Submit. Yes. I want it.

Whatever the Hive, you are one of us it was doing to her, it wasn’t finished. It wanted her, too. It wanted to fuck her brains out, even as it sucked them out of the back of her head. Fucked and sucked. God, did that suddenly seem like the best fucking idea ever. She moaned, and spread her legs. The thing darted between them, then slipped inside her.

She’d been expecting it to fuck her hard, but to her surprise, it entered her gently, just like Doug, back when they were both young and fooling around. In and out. In and out. You are one of us. You are Hive. In and out. In and out.

“Mmmm h-hive y-yes m-more please more mmmm yessss...”

I’m getting off in front of Madison, I can’t... oh fuck don’t stop now this feels so good I’m sorry Maddie but need this so baaaad…

You’re going to be one of us, mom, said Madison, in a voice that didn’t sound at all like Madison. You will be Hive. She dropped to her knees and examined the clothes on the ground, rummaging through pockets until she found what she was looking for. When she stood up again, she faced Ashley, a pocket knife in her right hand.

“M-madissssonnnn?” God, this was unreal. She’d never been fucked like this. Never like this.

You are Hive. Madison opened the knife and went to work on Ashley’s shirt, carefully splitting it down the middle so that she could pull it free, Ashley only mustering a few mumbles of protest before it fell to the ground in tatters. Madison dropped the knife next to it, then fell to her knees again to unbutton Ashley’s shorts.

She spends a lot of time on her knees, Ashley pondered. Something about that felt wrong, as if she needed to scold her daughter, or perhaps even herself, for thinking such a dirty thought. But it was true. Not only that, it was right. Ashley wanted to be on her knees, too. Serving. Obeying. Worshiping.

I am Hive. You are Hive.

Madison was Hive. Ashley was Hive now, too. Maybe Jennifer could be Hive, if she wasn’t already. Everyone could be Hive. Everyone needed to be Hive. Ashley’s friends and coworkers needed to be Hive. Maybe another field trip was in order.

In. One of us. Out. You are Hive. In. One of us. Out. You are Hive. In. One of us. Out. You are Hive. In. One of us. Out. You are Hive.

Then Madison said something strange, something that would have been entirely unthinkable to either of them a month ago.

When you come, you will obey the Hive forever, body and soul.

But Ashley understood it now. It made perfect sense. Body and soul. No need for a mind, the Hive would take care of that. Just her body and her soul.

Let the Hive make all of my decisions.

She shouted something when the orgasm arrived, something like ‘yes’ or ‘obey’ or even ‘Hive,’ not that she’d , not that it mattered. She was Hive now.

The something echoed from rock to rock and from crystal to crystal, eventually emerging from the cave to be carried away by the autumn breeze.
